Artist’s Statement

The intrinsic theme in my work is the relationship between initial perception of what’s on the surface and the hidden narrative that’s revealed within through thinking about more than the obvious. Relationships seem simple on the surface though they’re deceptively complex when you observe them. Life is pain. So much that most people become unwilling to even look beyond the surface of anything out of fear of what could be beneath it. The challenges I had early in life taught me to break through boundaries on the surface. I learned that instead of letting challenges discourage me from pursuing my goals, that’s where learning and growth occurred beyond perceived limitations of surface impediments. As part of my creative process, I use techniques that are physically and mentally challenging to help achieve a highly focused flow state where my perception is heightened, and my vision can be realized. Processes such as hot glass forming, polishing, or creating immersive environments with multiple element installations, larger than human scale challenge the viewer to look and think beyond the surface.

Using art objects and spaces as a primer to discuss relevant contemporary issues, I create an atmosphere where people from diverse backgrounds can embark on a dialog in a neutral place together. Informing them in a way they might not otherwise have access to about relevant contemporary ideas and important issues. When people are informed, they are less likely to fall for misinformation and promote an atmosphere of tolerance leading to social change.
